Having hemorrhoids is not only painful but it greatly affects one's lifestyle. Besides the evident discomfort, some people suffer from hemorrhoid pain and itching much of their lives. Some may even struggle with hemorrhoidal bleeding. It is even upsetting and costly when undetected hemorrhoids are aggravated thus prevention of the disease is a must.

How can you avoid hemorrhoids? First, greatly reduce your chances of constipation by eating plenty of fiber; fiber can be found in whole-grain breads and cereals, dried or raw fruit, vegetables, and beans. Limit or eliminate your consumption of no fiber foods, like ice cream, refined carbohydrates, and red meat.

It is very important to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Avoid the risk of having dehydration, which can be turn to constipation, by minimizing liquids that contain caffeine (like coffee) and alcohol.

And it might sound silly to say this, but when you have to go, go. When you hold it in, you only risk having to strain to pass a bowel movement later. So let things happen as they are supposed to, naturally, and you'll feel much better. It also helps if you don't hold your breath when you pass excrement.

Modification of daily activities is also advised. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing, instead take a few short walks. Lifting heavy objects can also be a factor, so when lifting heavy objects, exhale as you lift but don't hold your breath. For pregnant women, sleeping on your side will reduce the pressure on the blood vessels in your pelvis thus reducing the risk of hemorrhoids.

If you are a woman and have painful stools when you're menstruating, make sure you take in additional fiber and fluids for several days prior to the start of your period. Don't wear tight clothing, especially underwear, because tight clothes can encourage poor muscle tone in the anal region and can be irritating, which can promote the growth of some rights. In some cases, people with hemorrhoids have reported that it's more comfortable to go without wearing underwear, or to wear underwear that's lightweight.

Fluids given off by the intestinal tract may have irritants that may add to the fissures associated with hemorrhoids. It is also advised to wash the anus with cool water and soap to reduce the swelling and increase blood supply for quicker healing and may take out irritating fluids.

If you know you're prone to developing hemorrhoids, follow the tips above to avoid developing them in the first place. It's true that some people are more prone to developing hemorrhoids than others; however, practicing preventive measures will make you better safe than sorry, and you may not get them at all. After all, it's better to prevent hemorrhoids before you get them than it is to cure them once you have them.
