Playa de las Americas is one of the largest and most exciting resorts on the Island of Tenerife, but for the holidaymaker looking for a quieter time apartments in Los Cristianos might be better. This is a super spot to holiday in and although not as lively as the larger resorts, there is still plenty to do.
This is a popular holiday resort situated in a sheltered cove on the south-west of the island of Tenerife, close to the glitzy playground of Playa de las Americas. Los cristianos was once a sleepy fishing village, and although it has been transformed into a modern-day resort, still maintains some of its traditional charms. The focal point of the resort is the working harbor, and despite the fact that there are modern shopping centers, hotels and apartments, the harbor has remained as it once was. It is now surrounded by restaurants and a square and the promenade is the backdrop for the beaches. The promenade stretches all the way to Playa de las Americas. The old town makes up part of the harbor area and many locals still live here, it is a pedestrian only area. One of the best beaches on the entire island of Tenerife is the beach in Playa de las Americas, it is a man made beach constructed with sand from the Sahara dessert. A visit to Playa de las Vistas makes for a fantastic day out and it is only a brief taxi ride from Los Cristianos. Tenerife offers the joys of low duty and duty free shopping where visitors are able to quite literally shop till they drop in the many stores. Cultured pearls and handicrafts are a favorite for souvenir hunters, but liberal spending on tobacco, perfumes, cameras, designer clothing and electrical goods goes on too. Supermarkets are filled with popular English brands, particularly those in the San Eugene center. There is a street market on a Sunday where merchandise can be purchased cheaply, it is great fun to visit this market and haggle with the locals for discounts. Restaurants are many and varied, are all of a very high standard where you will find every conceivable kind of cuisine. If you fancy Indian or Mexican food, or just plain bacon and eggs, you will find it. There are also a few night clubs, discos and lively pubs, but most people venture to Playa de las Americas for their night life thrills.
